First of all, I want to say that the name of this show feels like a misnomer. It has the subtitle “Familia Myth”, which may not be the best title either, but it doesn’t immediately sound strange when trying to tell your friends about it.
As for the show itself, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” takes place in a medieval sword and sorcery setting where adventurers enter “The Dungeon” a massive multi-level dungeon beneath the city of Orario in order to fight monsters, find treasure, become famous, etc. Adventurers also join together to form guilds, or Familia, under the leadership of deities such as Loki, Apollo, Freya, and Hephaistos. The story follows Bell, a young adventurer and only member of the Hestia Familia. While adventuring in The Dungeon, a minotaur escapes from a lower level and almost kills Bell, until he is saved by Ais, a beautiful and powerful swordswoman, and member of the Loki Familia. After this, he becomes infatuated with her, wanting to become stronger in order to repay her for saving his life, as well as to earn her recognition.
While Bell does obviously develop feelings for Ais, it never feels like his goal is to date her or earn her love, but rather earn her respect. This is the main reason why I feel like “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” is an incorrect name. The relationship between Bell and Ais felt more like the relationship between Luffy and Shanks or Deku and All-Might (based off of what I’ve seen, I still need to watch MHA).
At the time of writing, it’s been a while since I actually watched this show, so my memory of story details (outside of what I can look up on Wikipedia) is a little spotty. From what I remember: the action and visuals are good, certain storylines are predictable, but not necessarily in a bad way, the characters are unique and likable (though I remember finding Hestia annoying sometimes). The only other issue I remember having with this show is the ending. SPOILERS FOR REST OF PARAGRAPH. During a fight with a giant monster in the dungeon, tons of people are involved, and yet somehow the monster was only taking minor damage until Bell got some deus ex machina power up thing and killed it (or at least, weakened it enough, I don’t remember) It was established that while he had gotten stronger, there were still other people around who were stronger, so it seemed weird that a battle was decided by him alone, when, honestly, a “teamwork” finish would have been much better IMO.
With all of that being said, “Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” is an interesting series with a fascinating world that has been established. According to Wikipedia, a second season has been picked up. Along with that, there are a lot of light novels and manga volumes, as well as a couple of spin-offs.
